About Our Society
Everything You Need to know
The Society was formed in December 1904 with less than 30 members. Since that time membership has grown to 900 making it one of the oldest and largest in the country.
Over the years many changes occurred the most noteworthy being in the late 1980s when the name was changed to Clacton and North East Essex Arts and Literary Society and soon after obtained its current Charitable status.
The aims and objectives also changed to its current form which is to “Promote, Improve. Develop and Maintain Public Education in an appreciation of the Sciences and The Arts including literature music and Drama.
It now meets these aims by providing high quality entertainment with a typical season divided between eight evenings of music of all types, from popular and opera to Jazz and eight speakers on a wide range of diverse subjects.
The Society is now large enough to attract performers and groups of international reputation. Recent artistes have included The BBC Big Band, Lesley Garrett, Zoots, Lord Robert Winston, Griff Rhys Jones and Helen Sharman.
Performances now take place at the Princes Theatre Clacton on Sea on Monday evenings between October and March commencing at 19:30.
The cost of membership is currently £53 which entitles members to attend all sixteen performances. Non members can purchase tickets “on the night” for £10 subject to availability.
A book detailing the full history of the Society is available on request at a cost of £7.00.
